What We Do

The Messina Legal Advice Office (MLAO) is a community based organization that deals with issues around;

Offering free legal advice to the community

Educating workers on their basic rights/COIDA/OHSA

Educating members of the community of whom to approach when their rights are violated

Educating the community on child abuse / human trafficking

Educating the community on child labour

Educating the community on forced labour or prostitution 

Educating the community on labour issues

Educating/ driving awareness on xenophobia

Advocating and lobbying for the rights of community members including the migrant community

Monitoring work including detention facilities

Cultural and sporting activities

Distribution of information and Printed material on specific issues

Conducting voter education to the community on topics given by the I.E.C

Assisting asylum seekers to apply for section 22 and 23 permits at the Refugee Reception Offices and Points of Entry respectively

Assisting asylum seekers to appeal from decisions made by Refugees Status Determination Officers
